The Flavor Profile of Java Ijen Arabica
Share
Ijen Arabica Coffee, which is one of the most iconic Java Arabica coffees, primarily because it comes from the large, high-altitude estates established during the colonial era.
Ijen Arabica Coffee (often called Java Ijen-Raung Arabica or known by its estate names like Blawan and Djampit) boasts a balanced and "clean" flavor profile, making it unique compared to other Indonesian coffees.
Grown at elevations between 1,100–1,500 meters above sea level (masl) around the Ijen and Raung volcano complex in Bondowoso, East Java, its characteristics are largely influenced by the Fully Washed Process method used in most of its production.
1. Key Characteristics (Cupping Notes)
Ijen Arabica tends to have a harmonious flavor profile, often described as having notes similar to toasted grains.
Flavor Component | Typical Ijen Arabica Description |
Primary Notes | Nutty and Chocolatey. A clean sweetness and a low-toned richness. |
Spice Notes | Often has hints of Tobacco or light spice, especially in the aftertaste. |
Sweetness | A delicate brown sugar sweet or soft maple syrup flavor. |
Aroma | Fragrant and soft, with a nut aroma and floral hints, particularly in the Blue Mountain Ijen variety. |
2. Unique Texture and Balance
The main difference between Ijen Arabica and those from Sumatra or Sulawesi lies in its texture and acidity levels:
-
Body: It has a medium body; it feels full in the mouth but is not as heavy as Sumatra coffee. This is due to the fully washed process, which produces a cleaner taste and a brighter body.
-
Acidity: Features low to moderate acidity. The resulting sourness is often exotic and unique, yet tends not to be overly sharp, making it suitable for those who prefer coffee with lower acid levels.
-
Aftertaste: Has a clean finish with pleasant herbaceous or subtle spice notes.
3. Legacy of the Old Estates
Ijen-Raung coffee is also known for its consistent quality, thanks to the management of five major Dutch-era plantations—Djampit, Blawan, Pancoer, and Kayumas—which are now state-owned (PTPN). This consistency has earned it a Geographical Indication (GI) certification as a mark of its distinct quality.
If you enjoy coffee with low acidity and a focus on a clean, sweet, nutty-chocolate blend, Ijen Arabica is a classic and excellent choice of Java Coffee.
